A Piano and ‘Pipes’ Sampler
Join us on Wednesday, October 3rd, at noon for the opening concert in this year’s Trinity Organ Series featuring master pianist Eun Kyong Jarrell and master organist Aaron Renninger. This free one-hour program will feature piano and organ music (and several duets!) from Brahms, Chopin, Saint-Saëns and others.
Bring a friend and your “Bach’s” lunch, and join the artists tableside for discussion and camaraderie after the concert. Complimentary beverages will be provided. SCOTTISH BAND NORTH SEA GAS COMING TO WILLIAMSBURG LIBRARY
North Sea Gas has been performing music of their native Scotland for more than three decades. Their travels will bring them to the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland St., for a concert on Friday, September 28 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for Friends of Williamsburg Regional Library and students, and $8 for those under 17. This is another in WRL’s Dewey Decibel Concert Series.
One of Scotland’s most popular folk bands, North Sea Gas features great vocals and tremendous three-part harmonies. Guitars, mandolin, fiddle, bouzouki, whistles, bodhrans, banjo and good humor are all part of their show. Their many recordings have received Gold and Silver disc awards from the Scottish Music Industry Association and they frequently sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Constitutional Conversations Constitution Day Event
Constitutional Conversations’ Constitution Day event will be "The President and the Constitution: the Scope and Sustainability of Modern Executive Powers." These guided tours tell about Yorktown’s considerable military battle history, and the deaths and injuries that occurred during these conflicts, as well as the difficulties the early settlers experienced just trying to survive daily life in the colony.

This year, the Williamsburg Players is offering a Children’s Theatre series of shows, designed to be viewed, and more importantly, understood by our younger audience members, the K – 5th grade student. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to bring these younger audience members to this great selection of shows that will both educate and entertain. The Three Little Pigs is cut and dry story, right? This hilarious rock `n' roll musical is told with a twist - the one who builds his house out of brick doesn't get eaten by the Big Bad Wolf and lives to tell the tale. But is that the whole truth or just porcine propaganda? That's the question raised in this brilliant parody that follows the Big Bad Wolf on trial for his purported deeds. And with his own version of the story, the audience becomes the jury and helps decide: guilty or not guilty!

The Williamsburg Fire Department invites area residents to participate in their Car Seat Safety Check-up on Thursday, September 20, 2012, from 9am to 12 noon at Williamsburg Chrysler Jeep Dodge Kia, 3012 Richmond Road. Williamsburg Firefighters will verify that your seat is properly installed. No appointments are necessary, and there is no charge for the service.
According to Safe Kids Worldwide, child safety seats reduce fatal injury in passenger cars by 71 percent for infants less than 1 year old and by 54 percent for toddlers 1 to 4 years of age. For children 4 to 7 years of age, booster seats have shown to reduce injury risk by 59 percent compared to safety belts alone.
However, they are effective only if installed properly. In a study of child restraint systems (CRS) in six states, 84 percent showed critical misuses. The most common form of misuses included loose vehicle seat belt attachment to the CRS and loose harness straps securing the child to the CRSs.

Take a journey through songs about love lost and found with Stephanie Nakasian and master improvisational pianist Harris Simon in a release concert for Stephanie’s latest CD, “Show Me the Way.” The concert is Friday, September 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland St. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for Friends of WRL and students, and $8 for those under 17. Known as one of the world’s leading jazz singers, Stephanie Nakasian will take you on a melodic voyage, fresh and authentic that transcends the Great Ladies of Song in both tribute and originality. You will be transformed as Stephanie masterfully “shows the way” in a voice that is fresh and expressively invigorating. Her music runs the gamut from Duke Ellington to Van Morrison and from Cole Porter to Dave Frishberg. Many tunes are familiar and some are obscure, but the musicians — Nakasian, pianist Simon, bassist Chris Brydge and drummer Billy Williams — shine on every piece. “Show Me the Way” dynamically highlights Nakasian’s traditional swing and bebop roots with new exuberant polyrhythms and exotic harmonies. Naturalist and author Vickie Shufer of Virginia Beach will lead an edible plant foraging excursion at NewQuarter Park on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, from 1 to 3 p.m.
While walking to the park’s Pawpaw patch, Shufer will talk about other edible and medicinal plants found along the park’s trails. Shufer has lead previous walks at New Quarter where participants got to sample their foragings afterwards as Pawpaw smoothies and salad wraps.
Shufer has published a number of nature-related books. The most recent is “The Everything Guide to Foraging.” Her books will be available for purchase after the walk. Shufer also leads groups on nature tours and owns a native plant nursery, Wild Foods Farm.

Kimball Theatre Fall Lineup Provides Entertainment for All Ages
Richard Glazier Salutes the American Popular Song, featuring performances rich with inside stories and rare film and audio clips at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13. Whether he’s playing the music of Arlen, Gershwin, Rodgers, Kern or a host of other Golden Era composers, Glazier brings new life to old favorites. He concludes each program with a solo piano version of “Rhapsody in Blue.” Tickets are $15 for general admission, seniors and students are $12 and Good Neighbors with a valid pass are $10.

- Dean Shostak’s Crystal Concert features the master of glass instruments performing on a glass violin and Benjamin Franklin’s glass armonica in this amazing concert. 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Sept. 5, 12, 17, 19, 24, 26, 28, and Oct. 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 12, 15, 17, 19, 22, 24, 26, 29 and 31. All seats $7.
- “Let it Be: A Beatles Tribute Show” features performances by local favorites Smith-Wade and Tracy, Scott Varney, Robin and the J Birds, Poisoned Dwarf, Stephen Christoff, London, Chris K and Joe B. Jones, In Layman Terms, Runaway String Band, Timeline Jazz Quartet, and Herbie D & The Dangermen. Proceeds will benefit a local nonprofit for young musicians. The show is sponsored by City Arts Café. 8 p.m. Sept. 14. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students.
- Third Annual Storytelling Concert featuring Kevin Kling spotlights the internationally known storyteller and playwright, who is best known for his popular commentaries on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.” Kling will be joined by local tellers Art Johnson and Darci Tucker. The storytelling concert is sponsored in part by the Tucker-Arnold Productions, the Virginia Storytelling Alliance and the Weavers of the Word Storytelling Collaborative. 7 p.m. Sept. 21. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and children under 13.
- Williamsburg’s Got Talent, a local spin on the television phenomenon, showcases the most exhilarating local talent in the region. Performers compete in front of celebrity judges, vying for their chance to win cash prizes and a coveted trophy. The program is sponsored by Chesapeake Bank, Howell Creative Group and The Tide/WYDaily/BACHfm and benefits the Williamsburg Land Conservancy. 7 p.m. Sept 28. Tickets are $35 for adults and $25 for children under 13. Blocks of 10 tickets are $30 per ticket.
- Rocky Mountain High in Concert spotlights five friends who pay tribute to the music of John Denver. Peter Budnikas’ versatility on stringed instruments accompanies the songs with six- and 12-string guitar, dobro, banjo, mandolin and fiddle. His wife, Marcia, handles keyboard arrangements. Scott Petersen plays six-string guitar and sings many of John’s quieter, reflective songs. Greg Davy plays the six-string guitar, and Peter Vining plays the bass lines. The concert is sponsored by the James City County Rotary Club. 7:30 p.m. Sept. 29. All seats $18.
- The University of Electronic Science and Technology of China Student Art Troupe presents performances in dance, vocal and instrumental music from different minority groups in China at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 30. The program is a free event but tickets are required. Unclaimed ticketed seats will be given away 10 minutes before show time. Donations will be taken at the door. The program is presented by the William & Mary Confucius Institute.
- The Williamsburg Symphonia presents Masterworks Subscription Concert #1 features Dukas: Le Peri Fanfare; Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto - Michael Ludwig soloist; and Sibelius: Symphony No. 2. 8 p.m. Oct. 1 and Oct. 2. Tickets are $36 and $48 through the Williamsburg Symphonia at (757) 229-9857.
- The Marvelous Wonderettes take guests to the 1958 Springfield High School prom where the audience meets the Wonderettes, four girls who perform such classic 1950s-60s songs as “Lollipop,” “Dream Lover,” “Stupid Cupid,” “It’s My Party” and more than 20 other classic hits. 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 10, 12, 13, 19 and 20 and 2 p.m. on Oct. 14 and 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 21. Tickets are $22 for general admission, $20 for seniors, students and military. Susie Butler, Jeffrey Nicoloff and Showstoppers Productions present this program.
- The Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra accompanies the 1926 silent film “Bardelys the Magnificent.” The sole surviving print of this MGM classic, directed by King Vidor and starring John Gilbert, was discovered in France in 2006 and then restored. Mont Alto’s five-piece ensemble – premier silent film composers and accompanists in the U.S. – perform a rich, engaging original score of period photoplay music for this swashbuckling action romance. The audience will also be treated to Mont Alto’s live accompaniment of a surprise short before the main feature. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $8 for seniors. William and Mary students may present a valid Collegiate Pass. 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 17. This program is part of the College of William & Mary’s Ewell Concert Series and the Film Studies Program.
- Scars on 45 in Concert is an indie/acoustic band that originates from Leeds/Bradford in the United Kingdom and combines the sounds of Snow Patrol, Keane, Oasis and Fleetwood Mac. In 2011, “CSI: New York” selected the group’s song, “Beauty’s Running Wild,” for an extended closing scene. Their single, “Heart on Fire,” was chosen to promote the 2011-12 season of the ABC medical drama series, “Grey’s Anatomy.”92.3 FM The Tide sponsors this concert. 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23. All seats are $15.
- La Farce de Maitre Pathelin, a creative adaptation of the 15th-century play, features hilarious misadventures and a cast of misfits. The play is performed in French by troupe members and is suitable for all ages and all levels of French proficiency. 7 p.m. Oct. 24. This is a free event but tickets are required. Unclaimed ticketed seats will be given away 10 minutes prior to show time. Le Theatre de la Chandelle Verte presents this program.
- Opera in Williamsburg presents L’Elsir d’Amore by Gaetano Donizetti.“L’Elsir d’Amore,” or The Love Potion, is one of the most popular operas in the world today. Performers include tenor Jonathan Blalock, baritone Gustavo Feulien, bass-baritone Sidney Outlaw, soprano Tal Ganor and soprano Faustine de Mones. The opera is presented in Italian with English supertitles. 8 p.m. Oct. 26. For details, go towww.operainwilliamsburg.org. - Conversation with a Founding Father provides guestswith the opportunity to talk with Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, or the Marquis de Lafayette about their lives in the 18th century. Guests have the opportunity to ask questions. This program takes place 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 4-Nov. 20 and Thursdays, Sept. 6-Nov. 22. - 18th-century Play Series: The Walking Statue is a fast-paced farce full of disguises, deceptions and devils all designed to overcome all obstacles that stand in the way of true love. 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 27-Nov. 8 and Nov. 22. Tickets are $16 for adults and youth and $8 for children under six.
- A Grand Medley of Entertainments features a variety show where everything that can go wrong does. This event takes place 7:30 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 8-Nov. 5. Adults/youth, $16, children under six, $8.
Located in Williamsburg’s Merchants Square, the beautifully restored Kimball Theatre presents films, live performances, musical concerts, and special programs. Nationwide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

The Police Department is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for the Nationwide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the James City County Recreation Center.
Disposing of unused and unwanted medications helps eliminate the opportunity for prescription drug abuse. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. For more information, visit the DEA's website or call Sgt. Humphries with the James City County Police Department at 757-603-6022."

Art Stroll in Yorktown
The Yorktown Arts Foundation and York County invite the public to celebrate Arts Month in Yorktown with the first ever Art Stroll set for Sunday, Sept. 30, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The stroll will feature over 20 local artists displaying their diverse visual arts work throughout the Historic Village of Yorktown and Riverwalk Landing.
Beginning at 11 a.m., guests will receive a map showing all the locations where participating artists will be available to talk about their unique style and medium of artwork. Pick up a copy of the map at the Gallery at York Hall located at 301 Main Street, in the Yorktown Freight Shed at 331 Water Street or on theYorktown trolley. Use the map to enjoy an early fall day with a walking tour from artist to artist or conserve your energy for the whole day’s event by taking the trolley. Your connection to the visual arts by map and trolley will take you to amazing works of pottery, paintings, photography, fiber arts, music, woodturnings, jewelry, hand blown beads, baskets and decorative painted furniture.
After the Art Exhibits close at 6 p.m., many of the local restaurants and shops will extend their hours for this special event so that you can enjoy an evening of fine dining and visit the specialty shops in the Village or just sit on a bench to view the scenery of theYork River.

The Yorktown Arts Foundation’s primary mission is to provide arts education through presentations and classes and to provide venues for artist to show and sell their work.

“Zoo/Baby: An Evening with Albee and Durang” presents two classics of American absurdist theatre: Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Edward Albee’s play “The Zoo Story” and Tony Award winner Christopher Durang's play “Baby With The Bathwater.” Panglossian Productions and Williamsburg Regional Library jointly present “Zoo/Baby” in the Williamsburg Library Theatre.
“The Zoo Story’s” witty dialogue and existentialist themes tell the story of a young man alienated from the human race. It’s a searing story of loneliness and the desperate need for recognition that builds to a violent, shattering climax.
“Baby With The Bathwater” traces the life of Daisy Dingleberry, a boy whose confused and demented parents dress him as a girl for the first 15 years of his life. Wildly funny and brazenly satiric, “Baby With The Bathwater” keeps the laughter bubbling with its good-humored wackiness.
Under the direction of Robert Weathers, the shows feature a cast of Sam Miller, Jay Knowlton, Deirdre Jones, Brian Murray, Kate Tilley, Gabby Montrond, Courtney Churilla, Caitlin Burke, Sharon Hollands, Laurel Daggers, Miguel Girona and Audrey Biser. The Mariners’ Museum - October Events
Fleet Forces Band - October 10th at 7pm
Marking the occasion of the U.S. Naval Academy’s anniversary, The U.S. Fleet Forces Band will perform as part of The Mariners’ Museum’s Fall Lecture Series. The program will include Naval and patriotic music, as well as a discussion led by Lt. Cmdr. Bruce A. McDonald, who is the director of the Fleet Forces Band. The band provides musical support for ships, military bases, foreign dignitaries, and many community events. It is the largest of the Navy’s 11 fleet bands and is based in Norfolk. Lt. Comdr. McDonald holds a master’s degree in instrumental conducting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
This event is free, including refreshments. Member are encouraged to reserve a seat.

Civil War 150th Lecture Series – The Monitor at the Washington Navy Yard
October 20th at 1pm
This will continue the exciting lecture series occurring periodically throughout the year of 2012. These lectures will highlight the most important dates surrounding the USS Monitor. Mariners’ Museum staff and volunteers will this informative, illustrated lecture on Ironclad Steam Warships.
Ads in the Washington newspapers announced that the Monitor would be open for public tours during her brief stay at the Navy Yard in the fall of 1862 while she was undergoing repairs. Scores of citizens flocked onboard to see the vessel – and took anything that wasn’t nailed down. Find out how the Monitor’s officers and crew coped with the crowds, adapted to their new surroundings and met their new comrades in the nation’s capital.

Gary Jobson, President of US SAILING will present his latest book, Sailing: Speed and Passion, highlighting the Newport-Bermuda Race, New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, classic yachts, Antarctica, and Ultimate Sailing.
In 2013, the America’s Cup returns to the United States for the first time in 18 years. The competition for the oldest trophy in international sport makes its way to San Francisco, the site of the America’s Cup Finals. On October 24, Gary Jobson, world-class sailor and onetime winner of the America’s Cup, editor and author of 17 sailing books, will share his insight into the America’s Cup and his passion for sailing at The Mariners’ Museum.
Jobson is also a television commentator and two-time Emmy award winning commentator for ESPN and has covered the Olympics five times for NBC. After years of committed service on behalf of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Jobson, in his words, "became a beneficiary of the research advances I had helped support." He is now cancer-free and the national chairman of The Leukemia Cup Regatta, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's sailing program.
Doors open at 6:00 P.M. and a book signing and light reception will follow the lecture. The Mariners’ Museum members may make reservations by calling 757-591-7751. Exhibition Opening – Rebel Ensigns
October 27th, 2012; open until March 31st, 2013.
Rare Confederate ensigns and signal flags will be on display as part of our 150th Civil War series of events. The flags are from The Mariners’ Museum’s collection as well as some on loan from the Museum of the Confederacy, many of which have never before been on display!
This exhibition focuses on the variety and use of Confederate naval flags as a means to legitimize the Confederacy to the international community. Rare Confederate ensigns and signal flags will be on display as part of our 150th Civil War series of events. The flags are from The Mariners’ Museum’s collection as well as some on loan from the Museum of the Confederacy, many of which have never before been on display!
This exhibition focuses on the variety and use of Confederate naval flags as a means to legitimize the Confederacy to the international community. Virginia Living Museum Calendar - September 2012
While the museum recovers from the Aug. 25 flash flood, admission will be $5 off (adults pay $12, children ages 3-12 pay $8). Planetarium programs are free with museum admission. There is limited seating in the planetarium.

Sept. 4 Tuesday Evening Seminar: Peeps, Waders and More
The birds of Virginia’s coastline are amazingly diverse. They flitter along our beaches or silently stalk the salt marshes. Some just pass through on their long migrations, while others live here year-round. Join the Virginia Living Museum for a survey of our coastal birds and their marvelous adaptations to life along the water’s edge. We’ll review their past role in the conservation movement and examine the challenges that many of these species currently face. 6-7:30 p.m. VLM members $5, non-members $7, active VLM volunteers free. Sept. 5 – Nov. 18 Fall Planetarium Programs
Choose among three shows. “Solar System Odyssey” is set in the future when humans have depleted the resources of their home planet. “2012: The End of the World? NOT!” sorts the science from the hype about the Mayan prophecy that the world will end on Dec. 21, 2012. Take a tour of the current night sky in “Virginia Skies.” The planetarium is open Wednesday through Sunday.

Free observing begins at sunset at the Virginia Living Museum. Choose among four shows, $6 each: “Virginia Skies” at 7:30 p.m., “Laser Magic” at 8:30 p.m., “Laser Zeppelin” at 10 p.m. and “Dark Side of the Moon” at 11:30 p.m. The Wild Side Café is open 6 to 9 p.m.

Explore the wine country of the Delmarva Peninsula by bus and boat with the Virginia Living Museum. First we’ll enjoy a wine tasting while we feast on homemade oven-fired pizzas at Bloxom Wineries. Then we’ll venture out in kayaks on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay (weather permitting) before our second wine tasting at Holly Grove Vineyard. We’ll follow this with a visit to the charming Chatham Vineyards before we finish our trip in Cape Charles enjoying a delicious meal at Aqua restaurant while watching the sun set. This trip promises to be a relaxing exploration of the Eastern Shore. Lunch and Dinner will be provided as well as a few other tasty treats to enjoy with our wine. Sept. 22-23, 29-30 Fall Native Plant Sale
Choose from a large selection of summer and fall blooming native wildflowers, shrubs and small trees for a variety of garden sites and styles at the Virginia Living Museum’s annual fall plant sale. Many of these are excellent plants for attracting butterflies, hummingbirds and other wildlife to your yard. Native plants are good choices for area gardeners because such plants tolerate the area’s weather and serve as food and shelter for area wildlife, while also providing a good show in the garden. Fall is the best time of year to do the majority of your heavy gardening. All plants are nursery propagated. Sale held rain or shine. Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 3 p.m. Admission to sale free.

Shop at NINE outstanding museum stores – in one great location, the Virginia Living Museum. Sept. 29 Hawk & Warbler Watch at Kiptopeke State Park
Fifty years ago six volunteers founded a bird banding station at the Kiptopke Ferry Landing realizing that the wooded area was a natural funnel for migrating birds. Large numbers of birds fly down the through the Eastern Shore as they migrate south along the Atlantic Flyway. Travel with the Virginia Living Museum for a good chance of spotting bald eagles, kestrels, sharp-shinned hawks, and even peregrine falcons at one of the best birding spots on the Atlantic coast. Plus we can celebrate the 50th year of bird banding at this site. We’ll watch for hawks and observe field researchers from the Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory in action as they trap, band and release songbirds temporarily captured in woodland mist nets. Since we’re at the shore, we’ll even have time for a little beach combing! It’s a great way to spend a day. Minimum age 8, 18 years without an adult. 7 a.m. – 3p.m. $50. William and Mary releases ticket information for Dalai

Below is
information for both the campus community and the general public on acquiring
tickets to attend the Oct. 10, 2012, Dalai Lama event in Kaplan Arena at William
& Mary Hall. Approximately 8,200 seats will be available for the event,
which will begin at 2 p.m. Doors will open at noon. All information on the event – including any
updates on tickets, parking, prohibited items and other general information –
will be posted at www.wm.edu/dalailamavisit.
General Public Tickets (REVISED Information)
Members of the campus community who do
not receive a complimentary ticket and members of the general public who want
to attend the event will also have the opportunity to purchase tickets. Approximately
3,000 tickets – as well as any unclaimed campus lottery tickets – will be made available
to the general public.
Ticket prices for general admission
will range from $15 to $25, based on the proximity to the stage. Lower level
general admission is $25 and upper level general admission is $15. Due to limited seating, no more than two tickets can
be purchased at one time. Tickets will
be available on a first-come, first-served basis and may be purchased beginning at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at TicketReturn.com.

Campus Community Tickets:
More than half of the tickets for the event will be made available to the William & Mary campus community at no cost. These free tickets will be reserved for 4,300 students and 900 faculty and staff. Given the expected demand, a random lottery will determine the campus community members receiving tickets. Students, faculty and staff selected through the lottery will be eligible for one complimentary ticket each.
Members of the campus community who want a complimentary ticket must register online at www.wm.edu/dalailamavisit beginning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept 4. A name, ID number and campus email will be required; incomplete applications will not be accepted. Registration will be open Sept. 4, 5 and 6 to ensure that everyone has a reasonable opportunity to register – all applications received during this three-day period will have an equal chance to receive a complimentary ticket through the lottery system. Registration will close at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6.
All campus members who registered will be emailed by 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 7. Winners of the campus ticket lottery will be given further information on ticket pick up dates, times and location. A William & Mary photo ID will be required to pick up these complimentary tickets.
The
Dalai Lama’s visit to William & Mary is being sponsored by the William
& Mary Student Assembly. Alma Mater Productions
(AMP) - the student programming committee - along with the International
Relations Club are also co-sponsors. Additional support is made
possible through the Janet and Peter Atwater Lecture Endowment.
His
Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama does not charge a speaking engagement
fee, and no aspect of His Holiness’ visit is being used to profit financially.
Any funds raised through ticket sales will be used only to cover expenses for
the event. Should there be any surplus funds from His Holiness’ event, that
surplus will be disbursed to charitable organizations under the advisement of
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.
